The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) was founded in 1960 as a transformation of the Nigerian branch of British Medical Association, started in 1951. As the umbrella body for all medical and dental professionals registered and licensed to practice in Nigeria, NMA's membership spans all six mahor specialties of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Public Health and Laboratory Medicine/Pathology. NMA caters for the interest of its members, promotes health and allied sciences and helps in shaping national policies and legislations aimed at improving the health of Nigerians. The NMA is the largest medical association in the West African sub-region with over 37,000 members across the thirty-six state branches and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja branch.
